Description
"The Blocks That Hold Us" — A Textural Geometric Abstraction
This painting began in my grandmother’s kitchen. While rearranging her shelves, I saw how every chipped plate, ceramic jar, and weathered box sat together—each an imperfect but intentional “block” of a life lived fully. The jars were not arranged in straight lines, yet everything held. Nothing was perfect, but everything belonged.
For years, I chased order: color‑coded folders, perfectly aligned surfaces, a life that aspired to the clean grid. But those shelves whispered a different truth: balance is not about neatness. It is about the way we stack the uneven, the worn, the beautifully irregular pieces of who we are—and trust that they will hold one another.
Here, I built layers using thick, textured paint to echo the rough glaze of those old jars. Geometric blocks curve, overlap, and resist a rigid grid. These are not mere shapes—they are visual metaphors for the pieces of a life: the quiet mornings, the shared meals, the small, unpolished moments that accumulate into wholeness.
In a culture that often asks us to tidy our lives into straight lines, this painting is a quiet homage to the art of the imperfect stack. It honors the blocks that don’t quite align, the curves that soften the edges, and the gentle, resilient way we build ourselves—and hold ourselves—together.
Artist Statement | Eliot Vermeer
“The Blocks That Hold Us” continues my exploration of texture, memory, and the poetics of the everyday through structured abstraction. By combining architectural geometry with tactile, relief‑like surfaces, I aim to translate not just form but feeling—the weight, warmth, and quiet order of a life assembled from moments rather than plans.
Hand‑painted in with heavy impasto and subtle tonal variations, each layer is both physical and emotional. The restrained palette of whites, grays, and warm neutrals allows the texture to speak first, inviting the eye—and the hand—to trace the ridges, curves, and quiet spaces between.
Ideal for interiors that value calm, depth, and material presence—a living room, a study, a bedroom shaped by wabi‑sabi or modern minimalist sensibility—this painting acts as a visual anchor and a gentle reminder: our strength often lies not in perfect alignment, but in how we learn to hold what is real.
